Currently, Madalena works as a Sales Engineer, specializing in Refineries & Chemicals at Valmet in Lisbon, Portugal. Madalena’s role involves promoting and selling innovative technical solutions tailored to customer needs, working closely with the engineering team to ensure both feasibility and efficiency.  

Madalena, what made you study Automation, Control and Instrumentation Engineering?

“I've always been passionate about technology and problem-solving, and automation, control, and instrumentation engineering seemed like the perfect field to combine both. I was particularly drawn to how automation optimizes processes and improves efficiency across industries.

My father was an Industrial Instrumentation Technician, and growing up, I was inspired by his work and the precision involved in his craft. That influence, combined with my interest in automation and control systems, made this field a natural choice for me.”

What do you do in your role daily?

“In my current role I promote and sell technical solutions tailored to customer’s needs, collaborating with the engineering team to ensure feasibility and efficiency. My daily tasks include understanding client requirements, proposing customized solutions, preparing technical and commercial proposals, and providing guidance throughout the decision-making process. I also coordinate with internal teams to align product capabilities with customer expectations, conduct product demonstrations, and stay updated on industry trends to offer the best possible solution.”

What are the biggest achievements in your career?

“I believe my greatest achievement has been successfully tackling the challenges of adapting to a competitive sales environment, where I have learned the importance of resilience and continuous learning. Female representation in industries like refining and chemicals is increasing, which is a trend that I really hope continues. Diversity is a key driver of innovation, bringing varied perspectives and approaches that benefit the entire industry. “

How do you maintain work-life balance?

“To balance my professional and personal life, I rely on careful planning and time management. I set clear priorities, ensuring that work commitments are met efficiently while also dedicating quality time to my family and leisure activities. Additionally, I prioritize activities that help me relax and recharge, such as enjoying morning walks, reading, or spending time outdoors.”
