From condition assessment to overhaul - ViscoNip reliability

A proactive lifecycle approach helps mills get the most out of their ViscoNip press. Learn how condition assessments, planned overhauls and digital support can improve reliability, support shutdown planning and extend equipment lifetime.

An Advantage™ ViscoNip® press is a critical production asset. To maintain performance, reliability and uptime throughout its lifecycle, maintenance should be planned long before problems arise. Valmet's lifecycle approach combines condition assessments, preventive maintenance, planned overhauls and digital support to help mills extend equipment lifetime and reduce the risk of unplanned downtime.

Follow a structured overhaul schedule

A proactive maintenance strategy helps keep the press operating at its intended performance level while making maintenance planning more predictable. Valmet recommends the following maintenance cycle:

  • Annual alignment checks
  • Nip testing every two years
  • Basic overhaul every four years
  • Belt replacement based on operating requirements
  • Condition-based replacement of critical components when needed

This structured approach helps mills improve reliability, optimize maintenance budgets, plan shutdowns more effectively and avoid unexpected failures.

Make maintenance decisions based on condition

Rather than replacing components according to fixed schedules, Valmet's Advantage ViscoNip Condition Test helps mills evaluate actual equipment condition. Hydraulic testing, nip profile measurements and condition assessments identify developing issues early, enabling more informed maintenance planning and reducing operational risks.

Every maintenance activity should contribute to long-term performance, reliability and equipment lifetime.”

Restore reliability with a planned overhaul

The four-year basic overhaul restores critical wear components and verifies proper press operation before performance is affected. Typical overhaul activities include inspection and refurbishment of stretch cylinders, bearing housing, rotating heads, seals, hoses and hydraulic connections. Belt replacement, loading element replacement and condition testing can also be included based on mill requirements.

The overhaul can typically be completed during a planned 48-hour shutdown, helping mills minimize production disruptions while restoring long-term reliability.

Support every lifecycle stage with digital expertise

Support from the Valmet Performance Center (VPC) can begin weeks before an overhaul through remote monitoring and condition assessment. Follow-up support after the shutdown helps verify performance and reduce startup risks. By combining data analysis with expert guidance, mills can further improve maintenance outcomes and equipment reliability.

Maximize the value of your ViscoNip investment

When condition monitoring, preventive maintenance and planned overhauls are connected through a lifecycle strategy, every maintenance activity contributes to long-term performance. The result is improved reliability, better shutdown planning, optimized maintenance costs and extended equipment lifetime for the Advantage ViscoNip press.
